The History of Chipman Point\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
CHIPMAN POINT BECAME A VITAL CENTER <\/span>OF shipping activity <\/span>in <\/span>1812. Sloops <\/span>and <\/span>schooners delivered such goods as flour<\/span>, <\/span>nails<\/span>, <\/span>molasses<\/span>, <\/span>iron<\/span>, <\/span>rum<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>snuff to be <\/span>stored in the two sentinel stone <\/span>and <\/span>brick <\/span>warehouses on the shore<\/span>. <\/span>During the 19th <\/span>century, supplies were distributed by wagon teams from this point throughout <\/span>Addison <\/span>County and beyond<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A lakeshore settlement grew, including a <\/span>church<\/span>, <\/span>a school, a ferryboat, and a very <\/span>grand hotel<\/span>. <\/span>-The warehouses <\/span>accommodated various enterprises such <\/span>as <\/span>a general store, a restaurant, a post office <\/span>and a tavern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For many years<\/span>,\u00a0 <\/span>‘hard <\/span>money <\/span>plentiful<\/span>‘<\/span>, and the community prospered<\/span>. <\/span>Toward the end <\/span>of <\/span>the 1800’s, a period of decline occurred<\/span>. <\/span>The village shifted its center to its present site and the <\/span>Chipman <\/span>river settlement gradually fell into <\/span>ruin. <\/span>The warehouses still remain <\/span>but the <\/span>rest <\/span>has <\/span>passed into history<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In 1946, to enhance the newly renovated <\/span>Chipman Point Inn<\/span>, <\/span>a <\/span>marina was <\/span>established which catered to yachts and <\/span>cabin <\/span>cruisers. Although the inn burned <\/span>down in 1949<\/span>, <\/span>the marina flourished and <\/span>continues <\/span>to <\/span>do <\/span>so<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This deep<\/span>–<\/span>water <\/span>marina <\/span>is well worth a <\/span>visit for both boaters and campers.
